New Pulp’s Table Talk - Turning the Table

Those of you who follow the Table Talk column at http://www.newpulpfiction.com/ know we run a regular "Questions from the Reader" segment every few weeks. Well, the guys like the interaction so much (let's face it, sitting in an office with nothing but you and your imaginary friends can make a writer very lonely) they decided to try a new spin on it.

This week, Barry Reese, Bobby Nash, and Mike Bullock decided to turn the tables on you, the reader, and pose questions for you to answer. Question #1 (Bobby Nash): There has been a lot of discussion lately on the appeal of pulp and new pulp to modern audiences? What makes you, the reader, want to pick up a classic pulp or new pulp book? Is it characters, publisher, creators, cover art, or something else? What are you looking for in your pulp tales?

Accomplished a good bit of writing today. Wrote over 3,000 words to finish up the Lance Star: Sky Ranger novella and essay. Sent off to editor. Now a bit of rest, and hopefully get rid of this headache, before we record this week's Earth Station One podcast.

Atlanta, GA – Fans of Lance Star’s recent comic book story “One-Shot” who have been anticipating a new sequential adventure with the high-flying pulp hero can rest easy now. Bobby Nash presents a new story by writer Sean Taylor (Gene Simmons Dominatrix, Classics Mutilated, Robots vs. Zombies: This Means War!) and artist Aaron Meade (Pandemonium: Evil Incarnate).

The tale, entitled “Wing Tips and Neck Ties,” brings Lance back into action with the mysterious Monique San Diablo, the Saint Devil, who appeared recently in the Lance Star: Sky Ranger Volume 3 prose anthology from Airship 27 and Cornerstone Books. In this new adventure, Lance and Monique hit the skies to capture a serial killer with a unique murder weapon – his airplane!

“I’m thrilled that Bobby trusts us to take Lance back into the skies in this illustrated tale. It’s got all the fun stuff I enjoy reading and writing and looking at – high flying stunts, a beautiful woman, and even a dead guy swinging from a plane thrown in for good measure. What’s not to love?” says Taylor. “And I’m thrilled to see Aaron’s take on Lance and Monique. He definitely has a Silver-Age way of thinking that’s evident in his art, and it’s a perfect fit for a good-ol’-fashioned man of action like Lance Star.”

After a day of not accomplishing much thanks to a migraine coupled with throwing my back out I had a burst of creative inspiration that led to a late night writing session. It was great. I added a little over a thousand words to a story for the next Lance Star: Sky Ranger anthology for Airship 27. This one features a mysterious island, giant winged prehistoric creatures, an imminent volcanic eruption, and oh yeah, Nazis.

Here's a taste of the story.

     “I have no idea,” Lance said, scratching his head. “I do know one thing though. Whatever they’re up to, it can’t be good.”
     “Oh, I don’t know about that, Mr. Star,” a booming voice called out from the shadows.
     Each of them reaching for their side arms, Lance and Cy spun toward the sound. They weren’t fast enough. Instead, the pilots found themselves staring down the barrels of several automatic weapons pointed directly at them.
     A smiling Nazi officer strode from the shadows. He was dressed in full dress uniform, his medals shined to perfection. He walked with his hands positioned behind his back and carried himself with a regal bearing, not an uncommon characteristic of most of the German officers Lance Star had met in his life.
     “I am Major Wilhelm Adler, gentlemen,” he said. “And you are now my prisoners.”

They all feature prominently in my story for the upcoming Airship 27 production, Lance star: Sky Ranger volume 4, coming in 2012. After writing several down to Earth Sky Ranger stories I thought it was high time to do some sci fi with the characters ala the old G-8 books.

That's right, I've begun work on a new Lance Star: Sky Ranger pulp anthology and will be joined by writers Sean Taylor, Andrew Salmon, and Tom Novak. It promises to be a fun time.

Bad Girls, Good Guys, and Two-Fisted Action: Genre-Bending: How Pure Should Pulp Fiction Be? New Pulp authors respond.

Sean Taylor posted an interesting query on his blog http://seanhtaylor.blogspot.com/. Sean asked 'How Pure Should Pulp Fiction Be?' Some of New Pulp's finiest responded.

When you think of pulp fiction, what springs to mind? The hard-boiled P.I.? The lost Earthman winning and wooing on Mars? The jungle lord? The aviator adventurer? The masked vigilante precursor to the comic book super hero? Weird horror tales with skeletons and damsels in distress? (For the sake of argument, let's all assume you didn't immediately go to the movie with John Travolta and Samuel Jackson, even as good as it is.)

Pulp has covered many genres, and was originally so named because of the cheap paper on which it was published. Pretty much everybody who loves the style knows that.

But, over time, some genres tended to become more synonymous with the definition of pulp than others.

And some would argue that pulp itself is a genre. (For the sake of this article, we're going to treat pulp as a style of telling a story and not a genre unto itself, since so many genres were represented within its ranks.)
